Large Clowns

1972-1973, oil, c. 140 x 110 cm

“A more silent and sadly static atmosphere hangs over the representations of clowns. They are immobile figures, surrounded by an unadorned environment, just as their faces appear ‘naked’. Or they are playing, behind the curtain of a circus. And their gazes are more serene, but still ‘masks’.”

Gabriella Arceri, Il Cittadino, 1975

ANGEL CLOWNS

Wingless angels leaping
from cloud to cloud
came to earth
and dressed as clowns.
Magic trio.
They danced notes dressed in tears,
They played invisible violins.
Then when the lights went out
they fled in silence
so as not to hear the strange applause.

Gian Rodolfo d’Accardi, Mi azzurro di mare [I Am the Blue of the Sea], 1981
